[R-jobs] Intern at Barron's ! -- use statistics for investigative financial journalism
We're seeking interns for the summer of 2014 here at Barron's the Dow
Jones newsweekly that's searched out good investments and financial frauds
since 1921, when our founder exposed Charles Ponzi. We're at the center of
the financial world in New York and can pay a bit of a stipend to cover the
city's high living costs. Here's the blurb:
Do some good. Intern at Barron's, the New York financial publication with a
decades-long tradition of investigative journalism and a more recent commitment
to data analytic exposure of fraud in finance, business and healthcare. Bring us
your zeal and your data munging skills and we'll teach you how to be a
writer, stock analyst and gumshoe investigator. We assemble unique data sets to
scrutinize activities like Jim Cramer's CNBC stock picking, for-profit
colleges, Medicare rip-offs and the hyping of US-listed China stocks. Our
stories achieve instant reform of bad situations. Please help us make Wall
Street safe for the little guy.
We will hire one programmer-journalist intern to work from June through August
of 2014. Desirable skills would include programming fluency in R (for data
analysis and visualization), a scripting language (like Perl or Python) and SQL.
If you can write, you will also get stories published under your byline.
As part of the Dow Jones News Fund, the program provides free pre-internship
training seminars, 10 weeks' salary, $1,000 scholarships for interns
returning to school, and a travel allowance. The salary is not princely, so it
helps if you have a place to stay in the New York area.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: November 1, 2014 (that's a very soft deadline)

Supervisors: Dr Alex Singleton; Professor Chris Brunsdon Industrial Partner:
Office for National Statistics
Applicants are invited for a PhD studentship at the University of Liverpool
within the ESRC North West DTC. The studentship will be supervised by Dr Alex
Singleton and Professor Chris Brunsdon in the Department of Geography and
Planning; and is being conducted in collaboration with the Office for National
Statistics.
This three year advanced quantitative methods award will provide an enhanced
stipend of ?16,726 (tax free) alongside payment of tuition fees. You will also
have the opportunity to apply for additional funding related to training and
fieldwork expenses. This studentship is open to candidates from outside of the
UK / EU.
The project aims to redefine those methods through which geodemographic
classifications are created, feeding these developments into ONS best practice
for creating future open national indicators, such as the census Output Area
Classification. The project will develop an extension to traditional
geodemographics that more appropriately accounts for spatial context and the
relationship between small area geography. This will involve the development of
new methods integrating spatial statistics, data mining and computer modelling.
The candidate will require a background in Geography, Planning, Mathematics,
Computer Science, Statistics or other quantitative discipline; an undergraduate
degree at 2.1 or 1, and ideally a Masters degree in a domain relevant area. We
would be especially interested in candidates with some coding experience, either
in traditional languages (java, python etc) or statistical programming such as
R.
If you are interested and would like some more information, we have a more
detailed specification of the project available here:

Also, please feel free to get in touch with Alex Singleton (alex.singleton at
liverpool.ac.uk).
Candidates interested in this studentship should send a letter detailing their
suitability and interest in the project, along with a CV, to Alex Singleton by
27th September 2013.

[R-jobs] Intern at Barron's ! -- use statistics for investigative financial journalism
Sir: I find it rather puzzling that despite your title, you ask for training in neither statistics nor finance. One might wonder what sort of statistical investigative work in finance one would do without such knowledge. -- Bert Gunter On Fri, Oct 25, 2013 at 6:51 AM, Alpert, William <William.Alpert at barrons.com> wrote:> We're seeking interns for the summer of 2014 here at Barron's the Dow Jones newsweekly that's searched out good investments and financial frauds since 1921, when our founder exposed Charles Ponzi.
