Both Xft1 and Xft compile against Freetype2.  Make sure you configure 
things appropriately.

$ make

should work, if it doesn''t, please file a bug in the fontconfig
bugzilla
page with as much information as you can muster, especially including the 
CPU and OS involved.

I got everything to compile except a couple of things... 
 
Problem #1: Xft1 
 
When compiling Xft1 I get the following error: 
xftglyphs.c:29:30: freetype/ftoutln.h: No such file or directory 
 
I have the latest FreeType 1 & 2 versions installed. The ftoutln.h file
doesn''t exist in
the include directory for freetype so is it not part of the freetype-1.3.1
distribution?
 
Problem #2: 
 
I couldn''t compile Xft but after doing make in fontconfig and doing a
make install
even though I was getting errors compiling fontconfig, I was able to compile
Xft. I was
also able to compile Xrender too. However, now I''m trying to compile
fontconfig now
to see if I can get rid of the errors from before but no go. It reports: 
 
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-slackware-linux/3.2/../../../../i386-slackware-linux/bin/ld:
cannot
find -lfontconfig 
 
The question is how do I build the fontconfig library?
