There was a serious bug in the font sorting code that would drop many 
fonts from the list in some cases.  Could this be what you''re seeing?

gucharmap told to browse Bitstream Cyberbit chooses many characters from
other fonts, even though they are present in this font. I''m not sure
it''s
fontconfig''s fault, but something is wrong. Help!
