G''day, Does anyone here run shorewall on a DG834G... I''ve seen some websites with linux hacking stuff for these ADSL wireless routers, but I''m not keen to be the trailblazer on this. Ideally I''d like to run shorewall and in particular the TC stuff on the router, but am not prepared to go through heaps of pain to do it. -- Donovan Baarda http://minkirri.apana.org.au/~abo/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. It might be a lot simpler to choose a device that is supported and buy it - most of them don''t cost much these days. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. If I''m going to run shorewall on anything embedded, it has got to have and support the ADSL modem... otherwise I may as well just run it on a linux box. -- Donovan Baarda http://minkirri.apana.org.au/~abo/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. Donovan Baarda wrote:>The Open WRT project seems to focus on wireless router/switch stuff, >with no mention of integrated ADSL modem support.I have to admit I hadn''t observed that. I suspect that running Linux on a box is one thing, finding out how to drive it''s ADSL hardware is another difficult step.>If I''m going to run shorewall on anything embedded, it has got to >have and support the ADSL modem... otherwise I may as well just run >it on a linux box.True - that''s just what I do. I have a box running all the time anyway running mail, Azureus, dns, dhcp, etc, etc, so I''ve recently ditched the router and connected directly with a second nic and a Netgear DM111P modem - and of course Shorewall. Should you choose the DM111P, be aware that the firmware in shipping units, and the update on their website, has a problem with IPSEC VPNs - so the units I''ve been setting up at work for a customer are running a Beta firmware they supplied. I did try a D-Link DSL-300T modem which is now quite old, but it kept falling over - I suspect it couldn''t cope with the ARP table created by lots of Bittorrent peers connecting. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. It might not be the cleanest solution, but there are so many cheap devices that are fully supported in OpenWRT that it hardly is worth the effort to be a "trailblazer" with your DG834G. Just my two cents. -Russel ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. Earn Cash. I''d rather not have a cluster of devices taking up space and adding points of failure and hassles. Its going to be easier to run shorewall on the Linux server and just have all the traffic go in and out from it via the Netgear. This way I treat the netgear as a combined dumb switch, ADSL modem, and wireless AP. -- Donovan Baarda <abo@minkirri.apana.org.au> http://minkirri.apana.org.au/~abo/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
