Google Gears (off-line support) - Any plans for Prototype supporting this???
Hi, Are there any plans to provide off-line support for web applications in Prototype using the recently announced Google Gears? I don''t think so. This is too specific and from what i understand the user needs like Google and install the Gears application, which limits the use of the whole thing imho. And just for the (currently rare) case that the coder and his app uses Gears, and some people visiting your site then have it installed, a widely used library such as Prototype most likely won''t include extra 5-20k Google code. But i am just the average joe. You should ask the in the prototype-core group anyways... Re: Google Gears (off-line support) - Any plans for Prototype supporting this???
Hi Greg, I''m guessing (and hoping) there will be. I read/heard Alex Russell of Dojo contributed to the implementation of Gears, and Dojo Offline is adding a wrapper/abstraction around Gears for their JStoolkit. I''d guess the Prototype core team might write some wrappers around the Gears api. If they don''t write one, the Prototype community will probably create some good add-on libraries that come along in the not too distant future. After all, that''s why it''s open source, we have the ability to do this, as a means of contributing. My two cents. ...it sure is an exciting time. cheers, Mark On 6/9/07, GregH <greg.hauptmann.ruby-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> > > Hi, > > Are there any plans to provide off-line support for web applications > in Prototype using the recently announced Google Gears? > > Details of Google Gears: > http://code.google.com/apis/gears/architecture.html > > Tks > > > > >--~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Spinoffs" group. Re: Google Gears (off-line support) - Any plans for Prototype supporting this???
Is Gears API compatible with Firefox''s offline mode (which is an implementation of the WHATWG''s offline spec) - otherwise library writers (Proto, jsQ, Dojo) are going to have to write a stupid wrapper in the future :/ --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Spinoffs" group. I don''t think Prototype will support it, but there is already another javascript-style framework... It''s Gearshift: Rails Migrations on Google Gears :-) * http://m.ac.nz/gearshift * http://soapbox.co.nz/past/2007/6/5/introducing-gearshift/ On 9 jun, 22:10, GregH <greg.hauptmann.r...-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Hi, > > Are there any plans to provide off-line support for web applications > in Prototype using the recently announced GoogleGears? > > Details of GoogleGears:http://code.google.com/apis/gears/architecture.html > > Tks--~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Spinoffs" group. Any updates re Prototype and potential Google Gears support? Comments re best way to move forward with an off-line requirement at this stage for a Rails application?
