Help needed debugging "EPT Misconfiguration" exception on Intel CPU
(note, please send a copy of replies to my e-mail, I am not subscribed to the xen-devel list) Before I get into details about the problem: I tried to identify the CPU as precisely as possible (in case there are known problems with the specific model), but what I found in the CPU identification information (as reported by the 'cpuid' instruction) seems strange: unlike most Intel CPUs that report a sensible model name, which generally matches the commercial name of the CPU, (e.g. "Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU"), on the server where I caught the EPT exception, the CPU model string reads: "Genuine Intel(R) CPU @ 0000 @ 2.40GHz" This does not look like any CPU that Intel sells. The family, model and stepping numbers are 6 26 and 2, respectively. I did not find any reference to this particular combination of model ID numbers, except in just one or two forum posts on the Web, referring to the same non-descript model string quoted above. One of the posts even suggested that this might be a non-production CPU chip: http://www.spinics.net/lists/kvm/msg58258.html Now, to the problem itself: attempting to start a hardware-assisted virtual machine (HVM) on XEN 4.1.1 causes the guest VM to crash instantly on startup. The crash is caused by a VM exit that is not handled by XEN (and which cannot be handled in any way other than destroying the guest VM): the VM exit reason is 49 (0x31), which is "EPT Misconfiguration". According to the Intel Software Developer Manual (Vol 3B, Chapter 25 - VMX SUPPORT FOR ADDRESS TRANSLATION), this VM exit means that an invalid value was found in the extended page tables. Suspecting a software problem, I modified the XEN hypervisor to provide additional information as follows: - read and display the value of the EPTP VM control field - read and display the value of the "Guest-physical address" control field (GPA) - use the guest-physical address value to traverse the EPT structures and display all 4 levels of page table entries that pertain to the GPA reported by the CPU. I was not able to find any error in the EPTP value, nor in the EPT table entries, they all seem to be valid.
