Have worked in and around systems admin for the better part of 10 years, I had never really gotten to a point of forcing myself to roll out a configuration management system. Sure I had my own scripts to do this, or to do that, but never a complete system. Puppet, however, has found a new home. Last night, for the first time, I could log into a server remotely on a console, reboot it, do a default FreeBSD network install via PXE boot and NFS, add a puppet user, add the ruby, rubygems and puppet gem, and run puppetd --test then sign and puppetd and log out. 30 minutes later I log back in and it is a complete web server with database connections, full rails stack and 60 virtual host websites running with SVN updates happening and all the little custom programs and scripts all the sites need. Including my home directory set up just the way I like, prompt and all. It turned a literally full day job to 10 minutes of keyboard pressing followed by 20 minutes of doing whatever else I pleased while puppet took care of the details. I don''t know if anyone has told you lately Luke, and to all the community out there that help support it and code for it.... But Puppet SERIOUSLY rocks! Thanks guys and gals! We''ll be expanding its functionality over the course of the year, of course. However, at this point that GUI is going to be commercial; as much as I love appreciation, I love eating more. The initial goal is to take all of the reports coming in from clients (your clients are sending reports, right?) and munge them into a nice "what''s happening on my Puppet network" interface, with pretty graphs, log information, and whatever else we can find that makes sense.> >> If any of you are interested in a great GUI for monitoring your >> Puppet >> infrastructure, ping me, as I''d like to see what people are really >> looking for. > > monitoring? what do you mean? Instead of nagios or to ensure recipes > are run?More the latter -- tracking the client reports and making conclusions about client state from them, things like that. Not real-time monitoring like Nagios does, but over time, graphs, last check-in, etc. Of course, that''s just the first module. We''ll be adding node classification, configuration tracking, and discovery as soon as we can. If these things are wicked-important to you, such that you want to help fund the development to get them sooner, please contact me out-of- band, as at this point it''s a question of how many resources we can dedicate to the applications. -- The difference between scientists and engineers is that when engineers screw up, people die. -- Professor Orthlieb --------------------------------------------------------------------- Luke Kanies | http://reductivelabs.com | http://madstop.com --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Puppet Users" group. I know many won''t but why not > put a PayPal link up?I think I''ve had luke@reductivelabs.com posted somewhere for a while, but I haven''t been very vocal about it. I guess I''m trying to focus on adding enough real value that I''m providing something people really want to pay for. As with all oss startups, I''m struggling with that a bit -- there''s more to do than one or two people can get done, and I''ve not been able to grow Reductive Labs enough to meet the needs of community as much as I''d like. Hopefully dabbling in commercial software will allow this growth without compromising the Puppet core, and I''d like to think it will also enable me to start doing some of the much larger-scale interesting things I''ve been wanting to do for a long time, like discovery and change control. Puppet itself will *always* be entirely open source, and I''m going to make as much open source as possible in general. I''ll make sure I put something up a bit more visibly, though. -- Trying to determine what is going on in the world by reading newspapers is like trying to tell the time by watching the second hand of a clock. --Ben Hecht --------------------------------------------------------------------- Luke Kanies | http://reductivelabs.com | http://madstop.com --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Puppet Users" group.
