[Puppet Users] More information on the Velocity Conference
Hi all, I''ve gotten a more detailed mailing on O''Reilly''s Velocity conference, which, again, is their first operations-focused conference so I have high hopes. I''ll definitely be there with Andrew Shafer (so you can all meet the new guy), and Adam Jacob is giving a talk. They''re theoretically still trying to figure out how to get me a talk, so we''ll see on that front. It''s a bit web-focused, but it has parallel operations and performance tracks, which is an interesting take on the problem, and it''s definitely got a lot of the nuts-and-bolts sysadmins from the big web shops. Here''s their full flyer: Velocity: Learn how to build web sites bigger, faster, and stronger Early Registration is open; register now and save! In two days you''ll come away with the tools and techniques you need to rollout enterprise scale web sites. We''re gathering a roster of talented speakers, expert coders, and forward thinking network architects who can provide an inside look at web optimization and application delivery. When the success of your online enterprise, new business initiative, or operational strategy depends on speed, scale, and sustainability, you can depend on Velocity to deliver the expertise you require. Optimization and Performance Sessions Two technical tracks that take an in-depth look at key aspects of web optimization and application delivery. PERFORMANCE SESSIONS Tools, techniques, and tips for optimizing high traffic destination web pages. Learn how to tune web servers, speed application delivery by 25%, and tweak the performance of Ajax, CSS, JavaScript, and Flash. These are just some of the Performance Track offerings: Hotmail''s Performance Tuning Best Practices Aladdin Nassar (Microsoft Hotmail) Hotmail balances a rich UI and a high performance experience. Aladdin Nassar explains how to measure performance, discusses the demands between rich UI and high performance, and the trade offs between developing for Web 1.0 versus Web 2.0. High Performance Ajax Applications Julien Lecomte (Yahoo!) Beginning with the Yahoo! Exceptional Performance rules, you''ll learn how to design, implement, and test high performance Ajax applications, including page load, high performance Javascript, html, and CSS, for starters. Web Site Performance Measurement Ernest Mueller (National Instruments Corporation) Learn how to get a true measure of performance on a complex website. Simple image optimization techniques can make your pages leaner with no code changes and no human intervention, automatically. Learn how to optimize the size of the images you put on the page and send over the network to speed performance. Scaling MySQL Powered Web Sites by Sharding and Replication Peter Zaitsev (MySQL Performance Blog) Your application has grown beyond the capability of a single MySQL server. Now what? Peter Zaitsev explains how to expand capacity by first determining an effective strategy that depends upon your application performance scalability and high availability goals. With that in mind, you''ll learn how to scale using Replication and Sharding, and master the implementation complexities and aspects of operation. OPERATIONS SESSIONS Leverage the tools, technologies, and best practices that can make a difference in the way you work and the way your company conducts business. Here are just a few of the Operations Sessions presented at Velocity: Building an Automation Infrastructure Adam Jacob (HJK Solutions) Automation depends on having many operations pieces in place. Adam Jacob covers the many components that must be addressed, from consistent and repeatable operating system install to classification schemes, configuration management, application deployment, and much more. Using real cases, Jacob will walk the audience through real world problem solving including adding a new application server using open source tools. Performance Plumbing Adam Bechtel (Yahoo!) Learn how to exploit the built-in opportunities for high performance your network architecture provides as your operation scales up. Adam Bechtel, chief architect responsible for network, storage and systems infrastructure at Yahoo!, will explain how to take advantage of opportunities for performance as your network grows from a single-datacenter model to network backbone, including peering with other networks, overlay of anycast services, and how to surgically locate caches to suit a particular need. Incident Command for IT: What We Can Learn from the Fire Department Brent Chapman (Great Circle Associates, Inc.) What does your fire department know about managing emergency response to unplanned events that you don''t? Turns out your IT department can learn a lot from Incident Command systems already in place at public safety agencies nationwide. From managing the response to a singe-vehicle car crash to a wildfire demanding the attention of thousands of emergency responders, Incident Response provides a standardized organizational structure and set of operating principles for quickly and effectively coordinating the efforts of multiple parties in response to an evolving incident. Discover the principles of Incident Response and how they can be applied to IT events, such as security incidents and service outages. LinkedIn Communication Architecture Sean Dawson and Ruslan Belkin (LinkedIn) How does LinkedIn use 100% Java technologies to handle all user communications and the distribution of network events at LinkedIn? Learn about the architecture, implementation, and scalability challenges in building the communication platform for this rapidly growing professional networking service. Scale up at Velocity.
