Greetings, I am again going to try to backup my MDTs and restore them on newer larger disks. Ch. 15 of the Lustre manual suggests using getfattr/setfattr and tar command. At the Lustre User Group conf, it was suggested I use the linux dump and restore commands in place of tar. So I would still umount MDT from its -t lustre active status and remount the MDT -t ldiskfs /mnt/mds to run the getfattr command. In place of tar I would like to try dump. Will dump work with the mount type of ldiskfs? The man for dump does not indicate this but then again the man page is general usage, not Lustre. My goal is to take the attributes and dumpfile of the MDT and restore them (setfattr and the restore command) onto newer larger disks. Thank you for the info. megan
Megan, I have not used dump to do this before but I would have thought that you would then need to "resize" the filesystem after restoring to the larger disk. I have had limited success when doing that with ext3 in the past. There was a recent email on this list suggesting that the latest "rsync" versions can successfully copy over the EAs from one ldiskfs formatted disk to another. I would personally favor this approach. I believe the manual covers how to format an MDS disk manually using mkfs. [Lustre-discuss] basic dump question for Lustre MDT

My experience with resizing ext3 (not ldiskfs -- I have no experience trying to resize ldiskfs and/or lustre targets) is quite different. I somewhat frequently resize ext3 (and ext4 even) filesystems with resize2fs, on-line even, and I cannot recall ever having had a problem with it. Although now that I have said that out loud... ~sigh~ b. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I concur with Mr. Murrell. I have resized ext3 (have no experience with ext4) many, many times without issues. This is the main reason I use ext on top of LVM2.
