Lustre discuss - Jun 2006 - Lustre 1.6 terminology?

Hi.

After finally being able to grasp the terminology of lustre and building a 
basic understanding of the meaning of MDS, OSS and OSTs I started reading the 
1.6 mountconf docs.  There you suddenly start talking about MGSs, MGCs and 
MDTs, can anyone shed some light over the meaning of these acronyms?

Much of the terminology is the same.  Some of the acronyms we just not used much
in pre-1.6 documentation.  The MG* one are new though.  On all services there is
normally a ''client'' and a ''server'' and
sometimes a ''target''.  For the object disk we have:

OSS - Object Storage Server
OST - Object Storage Target
OSC - Object Storage Client

The OSC is on the client, and communicates to an OST on the OSS...  There can be
many OST''s per OSS

For Meta Data:

MDS - Meta Data Server
MDT - Meta Data Target
MDC - Meta Data Client

Historically there has not been a difference between MDT, and MDS as the code
was interwoven.  But this is changing as I understand it.

For 1.6 we get configuration ManaGement Server

MGS - ManaGment Server
MGC - ManaGement Client

Yes they messed up the whole three worded acronyms..

The MGS is talked to by pretty much all the systems for configuration and
failover changes..

Correct - the "MDS" code will become more properly separated as time
goes
on.  It is already possible to have multiple "MDTs" on a single MDS
node
(e.g. for separate filesystems), though by historical accident these are
also called "MDS" instead of MDT...

When Lustre 2.0 rolls around it will be possible to have multiple MDTs in
a single filesystem (Clustered Metadata = CMD) with an LMV (Lustre Metadata
Volume) inbetween so that the metadata load can be split over multiple nodes.

Well, strictly "metadata" is a single word also :-).

Correct.  The configuration management used to be a function interwoven
with the MDS, but it is now separate and can optionally be on a different
node from the MDS.
