Typed MS2000 into a web form. This is windows 2000 factory installed on an 12 week old Dell machine. 4*atan(1) returns the correect answer, in fact, that I have been using for pi since I realized the problem. It seems R is loading a previously saved workspace. I did not think that I had ever ``saved'' a workspace, but it seems that I did and that somehow pi was assigned in that workspace. I am somewhat surprised that R would let you redefine built-in constants without warning. Thank you for your kind suggestions. I apologize for wasting your time.
