Paul, do you have the output from configure? What probably happens is that the libs libz.a and libncurses.a get picked up erroneously in the configure stage. For a quick fix, could you check whether R compiles cleanly after adding in config.site: LIBS="-L/usr/local/lib -lreadline -lcurses" (Replacing /usr/prod/contrib/lib with the path to the directory where you find libreadline.a on your system. Other candidates are /usr/lib or /usr/prod/contrib/lib.) -tom P.S. which version of AIX are using?
