1) The effect of "make clean" is the "more standard". I
checked
with some programs of which I have the source installed and
no remove config.cache with only clean.
2) When you have config.cache and you rerun configure
you obtain a lot of line of the type "something (cached)".
The meaning of this must perhaps be explained in the documentation.
