The same happens (re: attach returned 6) on my AMD X2 3800+ box at
home (running RELENG_7) when I *do not* have Cool'n'Quiet enabled in
the BIOS.  All I had to do was enable the option in the BIOS and
the attach worked.

In your case, your system is using an Intel 440BX, which means it's
going to tie in to the PIIX4.  I'm voting you need to toggle some BIOS
options to get this to work.

Because this is an older (440BX) system, you may have to adjust settings
relating to power/suspend mode and other whatnots.  Even after doing so
you may not see success (meaning the feature you want may be explicitly
disabled/non-configurable).
