Hi, I'm running Samba 2.2.2 on RH 7.2. It has been running error free for about 4 months now and I love it. Last night at about 8:00 it started acting up. When a Windows 2000 user tries to log on to the server they get this error message "the semaphore timeout period has expired." I have checked the status or Samba and it is running. When I check the log.smbd file it says that the server is running as the primary controller without any error. The other log file is very difficult for me to make out, but I have included it here in the hope that someone can decifer it and help me out. I desperatley need to get my server back up and running as quickly as possible so my users can log in and start working. Thank You, James Simons here is the log file [2002/01/15 06:53:09, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(478) read_socket_data: recv failure for 4. At first I thought the issue was contained to my Win2k machines, it is not. Windows 98 and Me report that "the network is busy." I have seen some posts in the archives that have mentioned that the problemn can be worked around by trying several times to connect, but I can not do this in this instance. I've run smbstatus and do not receive any errors. Please someone out there give me a hand. Thank You, James Simons James Simons wrote:> Hi, > > I'm running Samba 2.2.2 on RH 7.2. Ken, Thank you for your response. I have managed to get one computer authenticated through samba so far...I read in the archives where some people had experienced a similar problem that they could eventually get in after repeatedly trying the connection. It worked after about 30 minutes of clicking and waiting on one computer. All others are still timing out I don't have a WINS server in place at the moment...thought it would be overkill for the 15 or so users that I have. Would you suggest that I add one? I am not very familiar with xinetd how would I go about checking to see what it is blocking? I am a sysadmin for a network with 6 Client PCs + 1 Mac and I use WINS, it really causes things to go smoothly. A friend of mine would disagree and say that you should use the hosts and lmhosts files on all the machines (yes they do exist on NT and 9x), but my advice would be to use WINS>I am not very familiar with xinetd how would I go about checking to see >what it is blocking? Can't help much with that, but Mandrake uses xinetd, so maybe there's some docs on their site.>Thank you very much, >James SimonsHope this helps Martyn Ranyard Development Manager Synergistic Software www.syn.co.uk +44 (0) 113 20 50 895 +44 (0) 1937 573 446 fax +44 (0) 1937) 574 211
Why don't you let samba be your winserver. -----Original Message----- From: James Simons [mailto:jsimons@ntinet.com] Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2002 7:53 AM To: Ken Cobler Cc: samba@samba.org Subject: Re: Users get network timeout errors Ken, Thank you for your response.
