You can use NetSaint for network monitoring, VNC for remote control capabilities, the CMU SNMP tools for monitoring SNMP traps and other SNMP advertised capabilities, MRTG for graphing data, etc, etc. There's no lack of tools to so what SMS does, though, AFAIK, there's no single "drop in" replacement for SMS either. I know Dave Roth (wrote a couple of the more popular Perl win32 modules) has done a similar thing. I need to see if i can package up the scripts and docs and release it under the GPL.
