samba - Sep 2000 - libnss_samba?

Are there any plans for implenting a libnss_samba library to provide name
resolution for programs linked against libc (e.g. "ping mywinshost")? 
Is
this even possible?

Yes.  Its referred to as winbindd (includes a daemon, 
pam and nss moddule).  Current support is limited to passwd 
and groups though.  No hosts service implemented (yet).
