Is is possible to have samba, upon request from the client machine, query a remote database for the username associated with the client machine, and accept that as user authentication? -- ian
Is it possible to set samba up to pull its authentication information from a POP or IMAP server. I want to set up samba and have our students logon using the email username and password. I was able to do this with EZPROXY and was wondering if it was possible through samba as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Wayne Dozier Greensboro College Network Administrator
if you are using PAM centralized autentication this is posible. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wayne Dozier" <wdozierlist@gborocollege.edu> To: <samba@samba.org> Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2001 1:30 PM Subject: Authentication question> Is it possible to set samba up to pull its authentication > information from a POP or IMAP server. As long as you are not using encrypted passwords: No problem at all: POP, IMAP and samba are all autenticating to the same ordenary unix files, NIS, NIS+ what ever. With encrypred passwords things get a litle bit more tricky, but once set up probably: no problem at all. Just get the first encrypted password (migartion problem) and keep them in sync (setup problem, which is solvable). Unfortunetly this implies the use of plaintext password, which (apart from the security implications) also requires client-side hacks and exposes client-side bugs.
