samba - Sep 1998 - SMBMOUNT impossible -- need mount version 6

Samba folks:

  I try (never did before), e.g. 
smbmount //tp/x /mnt -n
  I get the error message
SMBFS: need mount version 6
mount error: Invalid argument
Please look at smbmount's manual page for possible reasons

  "smbclient //tp/x" works fine, though. 
   Any clues? Kernel problem?
