samba - Jan 1998 - dot file hiding

Hi all.  I asked a similiar question a few days ago, but either missed it
or got no responses.  The archive also turned up empty...

Anyway, no matter what I've tried, I can't disable visibility of dot
files
in my home directory, or elsewhere.

What exactly do I need to do to hide dot files?

I've tried 'hide dot files = true' as well as 'hid files =
.*' and various
other incantations in various places in /etc/smb.conf.

Any hints?

well it looks like the files become marked as "hidden" but they do not
become absolutely invisible to the client. Making dot files invisible
would be very nice until a user created dot file intentionally. 

I remove dot files in the home directories of the "windows only"
users.
Dot files don't bother UNIX folks.
