I concur, I have just experienced the same issue using FreeBSD 4.9, 
removing the switch avoids the problem.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I've added an explicit AC_PROG_EGREP
directive to the configure.in, which should fix that right up.  The
version of configure I just checked in was also build by autoconf 2.59
(we had been using 2.57).
