My guess is that when Wine is trying to initialize fonts,
either it takes too long and you kill it before it finishes,
possibly triggering another problem, or it triggers an
error in the X server.
In the first case the cure is to wait enough (this can
easily take several minutes if run on a very slow
computer), in the second case the cure is to remove
the offending fonts from your computer.
