Do CDMA phones use the gsm codec?

Nope.

CDMA uses the EVRC codec, which is better at filtering out background 
noise than the GSM codec. EVRC sounds better than that farty sounding 
codec CDMA used to use, which again wasn't the same as GSM.

Even GSM phones rarely use the GSM 06.10 codec that is in Asterisk these 
days. CDMA never did.
