Hello all, If you're successfully running MS Word on Wine, could you please tell me what version of Wine you're using? Also, did you use Winetools for your setup or did you do it "from scratch"? I was not able to run Word properly with recent Wine versions. When I try to save a file, I get some message like "... Would you like to repair this application now?", after which wine hangs. Also, the toolbar entries that show the current font (like Arial) and font size (like 12) are displayed in a large font, so that these entries (which are usually just 1 line) become vertically scrollable windows(*). At this point, most of the font size is obscured by the scrollbar. With Wine 20041019, I had no problems. I have successfully installed (using Winetools) and used Word on this version. Thanks, Mandar. *: I'm not talking about the drop down menu that you get by clicking on these entries. That of course is scrollable anyway.
Right you are! The newer versions of wine (0.9.xx series) do not seem to be able to run office apps correctly. I have not been able to get msaccess to run ("will not start because there is no license for it on this machine") since at least version 0.9 was introduced. Word on my system just locks up if I attempt to save a document. I do not use word (i use openoffice instead even though it takes forever to start) and had not used access for some time but recently had a need for it & discovered that it doesn't work any more. I have been trying to find out if others were having problems before I put in a bug report. I suggest you put in a bug report at winebugs about word.
P.S. on previous post. Please try msaccess on your system (if you have it) & post back whether or not it works. Thanks.
I installed Office '97 on the latest wine from git (so, it's a preview of 0.9.13). The installation quit right at the end -- http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3689 -- but it left Word and Excel in a usable state. msaccess fails the the "no license" problem noted by another person in this thread.
This 'fix' is the 'hatten.font' that microsoft used as a primitive copy protection device with access 97. I have already explored this solution, this is not the fix here. When I attempted to install msaccess it did put in the registry line mentioned but still it failed with the 'no license' error. I will put in a bug report on this as soon as I have time. Meanwhile, anyone else having this problem please post here. I would also like to be able to confirm that the problem started with the 0.9 series of wine.
