Several ways to check voicemail counters:

- with the CLI: "show voicemail users for <yourcontext>"

 - with dialplan applications: "HasVoiceMail" and
"HasNewVoiceMail"
(check "show application hasvoicemail" from Asterisk CLI for help)

 - with AMI management commands: "Mailboxcount" and
"MailboxStatus"
