I'm planning on installing Gentoo as my distro and wanted to check here to see if anyone has any tips or ticks I should know about that aren't on the Wiki. I'm installing the TDM400P with a single FXO module for connectivity to my home PSTN connection. Anything I should know or do that would make this go easy? I have *read* that Gentoo would be a good distro for Asterisk or any other servers which require optimal kernels and stable operation. I also know for a fact that some users here are running Asterisk on Gentoo. I have attempted several Gentoo installs (one Phase-1, one Phase-2, and three Phase-3) last month, but have not been successful in creating an operational server. FWIW, I have RH8 running and a Mandrake 10 machine ready to migrate to when I get a couple of hours. -----Original Message----- From: David Ishmael [mailto:dishmael@windwardcg.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 2004 12:12 PM To: 'Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion' Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Gentoo I'm planning on installing Gentoo as my distro and wanted to check here to see if anyone has any tips or ticks I should know about that aren't on the Wiki. > Anything I should know or do > that would make this go easy?Yes: http://www.xorcom.com/rapid/ this distro rocks. Not Gentoo but was totally brain dead easy to install. Did it yesterday, and had a couple of softphones working in *45 minutes* starting from configuring the RAID array to dialing on a 4-way Netfinity. Hardest part was remembering VI commands for editing the .conf files, gave up, used Pico :-)
Yes My tips are.. Install mpg123 0.59r (do NOT use portage) You can install by doing make mpg123 in the asterisk src directory. Install asterisk, zaptel and libpri from src also. Other than that you can use portage for all other software. bkw> -----Original Message----- > From: asterisk-users-bounces@lists.digium.com [mailto:asterisk-users- > bounces@lists.digium.com] On Behalf Of David Ishmael > Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 2004 12:12 PM > To: 'Asterisk Users Mailing List - Non-Commercial Discussion' > Subject: [Asterisk-Users] Gentoo > > I'm planning on installing Gentoo as my distro and wanted to check here to > see if anyone has any tips or ticks I should know about that aren't on the > Wiki. Just using ipfilter/shorewall does not make a secure box. (Mandrake 10 does a good job of locking down a box. Minus whatever You install and run that might be a liability.) -- Steve Szmidt "They that would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin
