asterisk users - Jul 2004 - Where can i get an UK SIP account with UK number?

Can somebody help me with some names of good UK SIP providers?

I am looking for a UK number to connect to my asterisk server.

Can somebody help me?

www.iconnecthere.com provides UK numbers

If you babelfish yourself through it, http://www.sipgate.de does it.
Currently they are out of UK numbers again, but once they have them you would
get
a local London or Reading number.

If you are looking for a UK number just for testing/personal use, I can
provide you one.
 
For commercial purpose, numbers should be available by middle of
september.

What I want to know is why you can port mobile numbers from network to
network but say you have a local std code and you wanted to use that with a
VoIP provider in the UK - in most instances you cant.  Some are available to
offer STD codes in certain towns but not all.

Surely someone in the UK needs to address this issue for VoIP to become a
more common?  Its probably more of a oftel/ofcom thing.

It is possible to port geographic numbers between providers - I was able 
to port from BT to NTL.

So there is a process for doing it.  But I believe the new operator needs 
to have routes to accept the ported calls.  Presumably most do not have 
those routes.

You can port numbers between telcos, but lots of VoIP providers are just
reselling minutes off someone else.
