Mapstraction currently only supports map, hybrid, and satellite map types. Any thoughts on adding additional types, specifically physical/terrain, which is now a default, and very useful, choice with Google (V3)? I know I can add it directly using the native mapping object, but that takes away the whole point of using Mapstraction! I think adding mxn.Mapstraction.PHYSICAL is a good idea. How should we default for mapping providers that don''t have a terrain map? Well, here''s a simple patch to get it started. General question: I''m not really clear on how development''s proceeding with Mapstraction. How is the community working on V3, E..g, via this mailing list, in Google Code, on Mapstraction.com? The Trac project has been down for at least 6 months or so, and there''s no posted documentation for development practices, documentation for V3, etc. And the overall pace of development is quite slow. I''m not griping, but before I commit myself down the path of contributing to, and relying on, Mapstraction, I just want to know where it''s heading. As I mentioned, I wrote a Mapstraction Drupal module, but I''m hesitant to promote it so far ... Hi Lev, as someone who uses mxn.googlev3 in production, (and a supporter of mxn in general) many thanks for the contribution. I''ve applied your patch and checked it in http://code.google.com/p/mapstraction/source/detail?r=78 unfortunately, I''m not a project owner, so, while I have svn access, I can''t give you svn access. Please write to the project owners and ask them to give you access, the project needs contributors like yourself. http://code.google.com/p/mapstraction/ Regarding your general question of how development proceeds - mapstraction.com is greatly out of date and misleading in that it promotes v1 and barely mentions v2. I am hoping to change this, but realistically I will not make it happen until the end of the summer (I''m taking a month off in August, and this is on my todo list). Feel free to dive in. - the pace of development is slow, but on the other hand, we have code that works well (at least for my needs, can''t speak for others). Again, please dive in - as you have. please do promote your drupal module. Let''s get the project active. thanks for your input Ed 2010/5/17 Lev Tsypin <lev at levelos.com>:> Well, here''s a simple patch to get it started. > General question: I''m not really clear on how development''s proceeding with > Mapstraction. Thanks for the response and feedback, Ed, and for committing the patch. I assume the project owners are on this list, so can take any action they see fit. Regarding getting the project more active, I think you''re facing a chicken and egg dilemma. People will not get involved unless they think it has an active community and bright future, and by all public facing accounts, this is not the case with Mapstraction. So any developer looking for a mapping solution will come across Mapstraction.com, and the lack of activity on Google Code, and move on. Again, I''m not griping, just being honest and blunt. I only got involved because I respect Adam''s opinion so much and he''s convinced Mapstraction''s a great approach for map scripting. But not everyone''s has the privilege of hanging out with Adam :) And another few months before any changes is an eternity is open source years! I agree there''s not much activity at the moment but that''s largely down to natural ebb and flow I think - every couple of months there''s a lot of activity and it just so happens we''re in a lull at the moment. As for the site v2 isn''t quite at the point where it can supersede v1 - the big providers are there but I think some of the outlier provider implementations still need some work so once that''s done we''ll be able to do a proper build, package the library up as a download and publish the associated documentation. SVN access wise I''d rather new contributors post patches, either to the list or as attachments to items on the Google Code project, to start with. I mainly want to ensure people are running the build script and the testing page before committing their stuff to avoid breaking changes getting in to the library. Also, as happened with v1, lots of commits from people with vastly different styles results in very messy code that takes a *long* time to clean up - this coming from the person that did it last time around. Now I''ve got a bit of spare time I''ll try to write up a developer guide, identify what stuff still needs to be done on v2 and see if I can sort out some kind of CI. Here''s a patch for openlayers that implements just the ROAD and TERRAIN map types, and an example page that should work in the /examples directory. Build works for me. 2.9.1 according to their site. I''d be happy for that change to go in, it makes Mapstraction smaller. Considering OpenLayers weighs in at 856KB that wouldn''t be a bad thing at all! Using that method of including the hosted script I measure 193KB, and less than 1KB for the OpenStreetMap definitions. Should I test a local install also, maybe with a prior release? For my purposes I''d always use the current version, but I would definitely like to proceed in a way that I can contribute to the project. -dylan- On Fri, May 21, 2010 at 1:53 PM, Derek Fowler <dezfowler at gmail.com> wrote:> 2.9.1 according to their site. 193KB is gzipped, the size of that particular library isn''t really a concern though. Most likely we''ll go with that version however I''m going to check with the rest of the list first to see what the consensus is. I''d like to know too - especially if anyone sees issues with requiring the Open Street Map definitions. I asked earlier but didn''t get any responses. -dylan- On Fri, May 21, 2010 at 4:26 PM, Derek Fowler <dezfowler at gmail.com> wrote:> 193KB is gzipped, the size of that particular library isn''t really a > concern though.
