Apple has finally canned [1] the ZFS port [2]. To try and keep momentum up and continue to use the best filing system available, a group of fans have set up a continuation project and mailing list [3,4]. If anyone''s interested in joining in to help, please join in the mailing list. Why a separate list and separate hosting ? Why not do it here on OpenSolaris lists and host the repository on opensolaris.org ? -- Darren J Moffat

Just an entirely different community with different goals and habits I suppose.

I wasn''t suggesting it had to be one way or the other just curiosity as to why hosting it nearer the canonical version didn''t happen. -- Darren J Moffat

Why not do it here on > OpenSolaris lists and host the repository on opensolaris.org ?There had been no communication from Apple for several months leading up to this point, whereupon suddenly the entire website was taken down and replaced with a ''This is going to be removed'' message. There wasn''t any indication as to how long it would be up for, and it needed a quick response in order to be able to ensure that we didn''t lose what porting had gone forward so far. As for whether it makes sense to combine those two and re-host at OpenSolaris.org; that might make sense in the future. One of the reasons for reaching out here was to try and get some idea of how we could hook back in closer to the source. One of the problems at the moment is trying to find out what version of the OSX code was forked from, and whether we can hook up easily to newer versions. Ideally, it would be good if we could contribute back the changes from the OSX port so that there''s a single version of the codebase, but trying to find the ZFS bits out of the OpenSolaris codebase (rather than the whole) seems to be the main challenge. I''m just glad to see that someone has picked up the ball. Many of us use a combination of OpenSolaris, Mac, BSD, and Linux. Having an open source file system that has the simplicity of zfs available on all platforms would be marvelous. I''ve been playing with zfs on mac with an external drive and find it exciting. It replaced the NTFS/Paragon driver disk I had been using to store my portable things (like videos and music). I''ve lost several files because of silent fs corruption on NTFS. I haven''t had a single problem under ZFS and I''ve stressed much harder than the ntfs disk. That said, it''s back at version 8. It would be nice to have a process make it easy to keep up with the new zfs code bits in OpenSolaris. Gary -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
