Dear All I'm new to Linux, and even newer to Wine. So, please excuse... I've got a Dell D800 with both Linux and Windows installed. Linux is Debian Etch, Windows is XP. The reason for installing Wine was that I'd like to use FileMaker Pro 8.5 from within Linux. I've installed Wine to the Linux world by: sudo apt-get install wine This worked without problems. In the shell, I cd to the Windows partition (which is mounted as readable/writable) and to the path where FileMaker 8.5 lives: cd /mnt/winpartition/Program Files/FileMaker/FileMaker Pro 8.5 Then, I tried running FileMaker, which, however, did not work: ------------------------------------------ wine FileMaker\ Pro.exe Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin FileMaker Pro.exe ... err:module:import_dll Library WLDAP32.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\mnt\\winpartition\\Program Files\\FileMaker\\FileMaker Pro 8.5\\FileMaker Pro.exe") not found err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\\mnt\\winpartition\\Program Files\\FileMaker\\FileMaker Pro 8.5\\FileMaker Pro.exe" failed, status c0000135 Wine failed with return code 1 /usr/bin/wine: line 530: 9833 Terminated $XMESSAGE -timeout 30 -buttons " Dismiss ":0," Never display this message again ":3 -title "Wine Launch Window" -default " Dismiss " "Invoking $WINEBIN/$WINE_BIN_NAME $@ ... This dialog box is a temporary status dialog to let you know that Wine is attempting to launch your application. Since Wine is still very much in a development stage, many applications will fail silently. This dialog box is your indication that we're *trying* to run your application. This dialog box will automatically disappear after 30 seconds, or after your application finishes. You can permanently disable this dialog by selecting the option below. " 2>/dev/null ------------------------------------------ I also have FileMaker 6 (in /mnt/winpartition/Program Files/FileMaker/FileMaker Pro 6), which does work. However, I need the newer version 8.5 for my work. Can someone help me to get 8.5 running? Matthias
Check out http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=7691 for what works and what doesn't. You might want to try running the install from within wine if you still have the setup disk. Just load the CD and type wine /path_to_cd/setup.exe or whatever looks like the setup file on it. Not only are they of dubious legality, they can also carry cooties. Any app that requires a crack to run should IMHO be rated "garbage" in the wine appdb. I know there are crack-smokers out there who disagree, but that's my stand. But the advice to install from scratch is usually good. Wine is not so good at running apps already installed inside Windows. - Dan

Debian's packages are incomplete, and you are missing a lot of parts of WIne that may be important since you don't have ALL the subpackages installed. Instead, you can use the debs here: http://winehq.org/site/download-deb These are both up to date (latest Wine) and not missing any critical parts. Thanks, Scott Ritchie
