[vorbis-dev] A possible use for multichannel ogg files!
Hi, Has anyone thought about using the multichannel format as a way of distributing "musician minus one" files? Eh? I hear you ask. Ok. Basically these are multitrack files but you can mute the solo track so you, the musician, can practice against the other "players". You can buy CD's of this nature, but of course, the solo instrument is on one channel and the others on t'other. All we would need is a simple "mixer" application to allow tracks to be muted/solo'd from a simple multichannel ogg formatted file. Of course, only a single file would be needed to effect quite a number of "musician minus one" setups from a single recorded source! What we are not wanting in this "multichannel" format is Dolby 5.1, other ambisonic formats etc ... but a simple mix as per cubase, sonar, logic, protools etc etc but obiating the need for this expensive software! Anyone had similar thoughts??? Any views, for or against? We have a wonderful format here, we need to use it! If I am totally wrong, tell me! Any views, for or against? From the point of view of Ogg it would make more sense to do these as separate vorbis tracks multiplexed together. Not something vorbis 1.0 supports, but it will be in theora (our ogg-based video format) OTOH, that's more work to produce from a commercial mixer since you have to split off and compress the two mixes separately. For your application niche, it may not matter much. Knock yourself out and let us know how it goes! -r --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-dev-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. Hi Rob, This is one of the aims of a EU-wide research project we are working on called OpenDrama. The project is to disseminate Operatic performances over IP. We will use two delivery methods, DVB/IP download (Ogg files) as well live streaming of multichannel Vorbis over RTP. Both will go over the Astra satellite as well as conventional multicast/unicasting. The end user will be able to mix/mute out the vocals or instruments of a performance from a GPL'd QT based app (Linux/Windows and OS X), essentially allowing live stream mixing :) You may be interested in the Vorbis RTP Internet Draft (pre RFC document) which can be found here: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-kerr-avt-vorbis-rtp-01.txt I'm finishing off an update which will go to the Vorbis Dev list early next week before being submitted to the IETF.
