Syslinux - Sep 2014 - how does one compile/build this software for linux?!? Downloaded the tarball and all it seems to do is crash.

Your system is likely ill equipped  to build all 3 architectures.  You
should consider using the precompiled binaries in bios/linux/ and
bios/extlinux/
