...rding level way up, increasing the noise floor of > the recordings. the cure for this is something called a 'DI box' Line-level is line-level. A keyboard will be putting out an unbalanced line-level signal, and a DI box converts that to a balanced mic-level signal (usually XLR) for a soundboard. Since most computers don't have XLR (or other balanced) input, a DI box is not needed or useful. Some computers/sound cards only have unbalanced mic-level inputs instead of line-level (and some can be configured for mic or line); if you don't have a line-level input, your best bet is to...

Speex, what container?
The aplication that I am developing is like a sound recorder (goes directly to the soundboard and start capturing the sound and writing the file, using the directsound api). I'm already capable of writing to normal wav files but I wanted to encode the audio with speex to have smaller size (and still good quality). How can I write the wav files with speex content using the ACM codec? (...

Winamp streaming to icecast2
Hello, I'm trying to set up winamp to stream a live event to an icecast2 server. I've got the icecast2 server set up, and to date have streamed playlists only via ices0 or ices2, now I'm wanting to stream live using winamp. Software wise, I'm needing to use free or open source software, the icecast2 server is a Linux machine, the Winamp will be on either a Win7 or a WinXP

[Flac-users] FLAC in the news
FYI, Unless you've been checking the FLAC site you might have missed some encouraging things that have happened in the last few months. I haven't really been announcing things in the lists along the way, but to summarize: - Primus and Phish have been selling soundboard recordings of shows in FLAC - Magnatune (an indie label) offers their whole catalog in FLAC and Vorbis now - More hardware devices are supporting FLAC (and Vorbis), the latest being the Rio Karma and Slim's new Squeezebox. - Support in software has been steadily improving. gstreamer su...

DPLL in aec samples
May I still try to sync them using some kind of DPLL (digital phase locked loop) mechanism? Something like matching clocks and interpolating samples to try to sync them together? Do the interpolated samples get to be eligible for an aec in your opinion? Thanks, Dario > To everyone on the list: do *NOT* attempt to do echo cancellation with > signals sampled using different clocks. This will

Audio Speed Variability
...d), from the video. However, if I use USB devices for capture and playback, the delay disapears. To make life more complex, using the sound card only causes the delay on some systems, but not all systems. On my two main development boxes I see no problems with either USB or mini-jack on the soundboard, but on one of our other test machines only the USB works. It feels to me like it might be an audio clocking issue, but it could also be a speed of processing issue. Has anyone seen this at all, and if so did anything help it? Is there anything I can change in the speex codec to speed things...

MB soundcards and PCI soundcards
Here's a problem that I have uncovered on two entriely separate machines using the latest icecast2 and ices2 software. Even when the onboard soundcard is disabled, the PCI soundcard (which has been both a Creative Live! and an Ensoniq soundcard) is unable to accept input or stdin audio. If I enable the onboard soundcard everything works well and I can stream audio using icecast and ices. But
