Efficient way to login/logoff users
Hi there, I have a network running win9x/2000 machines, connected to a samba server with ldap autentication. I wanna know if there's way to receive information about login(principally logoff) in a fast way.. The WIN machines take a long time to send the logoff message (about 2-3min). I was thinking in running a program every time the users login and logoff, this program could send a logoff message to a server and it must run on windows machines..is there a way to run that program? Waiting answears, Erich Silvestre

oggenc questions
...c would make more sense) 2 Is it true, that oggenc uses only some predefined codebooks (depending on -q)? 2.1 Are they just "random" books, or were they "optimized" in any way 2.2 Is it possible, that some codebooks are stored in the header, but are never used (even in long (>3min) files)? 4 Are there any docs about the psychoacoustic model? 5 Does it compress using two passes (whole file)? 5.1 Is it necessary to use twopass to do "real" VBR (1. pass: estimate BR; 2.pass: compress)? (ups, this is a general question about VBR) 5.2 Same applies to windowsizes: It ha...

ridiculous slow gigabit transfer, faster with VNC
...he FTP is very consistently acheiving 50megabytes/sec, I don't think it can be blamed on a hardware fault. However the problem doesn't appear to be just samba either, as the slowness also occurs with scp, albiet scp is much more consistent at 5mb/sec than samba varying at 1GB/142min to 1GB/3min with VNC open. Is this problem something to do with TCP stacks playing up? What else might it be? Thanks

Performance optimizations for small files and case sensitive-option
...directory on smb server via NFS, cp -ar: 90 sec Copy test dir via smb to local fs on smb server: 90 sec I tried a lot to make the copy process of many small files faster and finally came across the case sensitive option of samba: Copy testdir 70MB with 5500 single files via smb: 180 sec (3min) using "case sensitive= yes" This is about 1/3 faster compared to the 300sec without the case sensitive option. Unfortunately case sensitive files and windows leads to strange effects that many users will not understand and thus is not a real option for productive use (think of creating...

login to ms access db very slow on samba 3.x
...it) debian with kernel 2.6.8-2-386. ever since our migration from samba 2.x we have speed issues with an ms access database which gets accessed by multiple users through an access2000 runtime application running on windows clients (2000 and XP). when users log in to the database, it takes >3min until the login-window pops up and users can enter their credentials. since things are not slow for the first user, but for every user that tries to login afterwards, we are suspecting some problems with the lock file of the db or with file ownership... also, transactions seem to be going on at...

Copying (Samba -> WinXP SP2) MATLAB generated .jpg files very slow.
...of his vision research. When he copies these files from the file server, it is very slow. I tried 3.0.28a and I see the same problem as we have with 3.0.28. Here are some interesting stats. 1) MATLAB generated files: command: robocopy Y:\23_1 C:\23_1 /e dirs: 2 files: 262 bytes: 12.75MB time: 3min 15 seconds 2) Same files resaved with IfranView command: robocopy Y:\23_1b C:\23_1b /e dirs: 2 files: 260 bytes: 22.05MB time: 19 seconds This is only a subset of the files that the user copies. The full directory consists of 8939 files over 101 directories for a total of 402MB and this take...

Help finding the mode and maximum for a specified 'window' of time series data
I am relatively new to R, so apologize up front for my long question, particularly if there is too much or too little information. I have a large time series data set where each subject's behavior was originally coded on .25s intervals for 3min task. I am trying to determine if the findings are different depending on the coding interval (i.e. Compare .25s to 1s to 5s to 10s). I also need to see if it makes a difference if I use the maximal value within the interval or the modal value within the interval. In other words, I do not need the...

run-time of an R function
I have noticed dramatic differences in the run-time for the execution of one of my functions depending on whether or not R was restarted. Immediately after restart of R GUI, exec time = 2.8 min. If I then repeat the execution of the function in the same R session, exec time = 7.1 min. Removing all objects via rm(list=(all=TRUE)) and initiating gc (gc(reset=TRUE)) helps, but only slightly (exec
