[Samba] Can see Linux box, but no shares from windows
Can anyone provide me a few suggestions? I installed Redhat 8.0 on my laptop. XP Pro on my windows box. I am using Samba/SWAT at the moment as well. I have the basic smb.conf that I took from the example folder and made no changes except opening the public share. (unfortunately I am at work so I cant show exactly what I have). I also added the workgroup = line under [global] and added my windows workgroup. I am currently having two problems. The first is that I can SEE the linux box from windows. Its listed, its there. I try to explore it, but I cannot. There is no share. Windows gives me the curious error that a duplicate name exists on the network and I should rename it. On the linux side, when I try to do a smbclient -L myhostname I am now getting what I beleive said NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILED... It had worked properly before. I am not sure what I could of changed to cause this. All I am looking to do it set up a very basic share at this point. Can anyone suggest to me a very basic smb.conf so I can compare with mine? Or even provide me any tips? I think I am going to start from scratch with it and try again. I have hit this problem twice now though so I am concerned what the issue is. There is no firewall. Encrypted passwords is on... I can provide more information when I get home if I am missing something(I am sure I am) Thank you for any assistance. Brian J. exactly my problem. I did use smbadduser BJS:BJS to correspond with the account on both the linux and windows box.. It seemed to go thru fine but I am a little sketchy on the user part in general. -----Original Message----- From: samba@universalgrid.nl [mailto:samba@universalgrid.nl] Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 12:51 PM To: Susol, Brian J.; Samba (E-mail) Subject: Re: [Samba] Can see Linux box, but no shares from windows I have the same problem with w2k. My smb.conf is: [global] netbios name = server server string = Test 18 default = global workgroup = workgroup os level = 20 encrypt passwords = yes wins support = true [temp] comment = Temp directory public = yes path = /temp You should also remember to add samba users with smbadduser. This way it works from the linux side for me. But w2k refuses to explore. Jeroen

I did actually... The first time I tried to set this all up I got to the same roadblock... So I nuked my laptop (planned anyway to clean up the partitions and all) reinstalled redhat, and tried SWAT... Same roadblock both times. I think this time I am a little closer that the last. Ive gotten a few good suggestions to try. -----Original Message----- From: Jon Robertson [mailto:jonrobertson@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 12:54 PM To: Susol, Brian J. [Samba] Can see Linux box, but no shares from windows
I can ping the server... by ip and even by hostname... in linux, using jags i can mount the dirs i shared... so i wonder if the permissions are a problem... i set the username and the password to my w2k user and pwd, so that shouldnt be a problem either... somehow i think it's more a w2k problem than a linux problem... somehow, i think, w2k cant resolve the samba hostname into an ip, i guess, or something like that..
