I would like some advice. I am considering the best way to restructure my backup scheme on my NT network. I would like to see if it would be possible/feasible to use cron, smbmount, some SCSI tape drives, and some type of archive tool to backup my NT shares to a RedHat box using Samba. What do all of you do out there? I would envision a situation where each night a script is run by cron that runs a backup on specific shares. How do all of you do your backups? Is this a realistic scenario or am I missing some critical point about it? I would like to avoid having to use our NT/Seagate backup solution because it is neither simple to use or reliable in its results. Is this pie in the sky or does this sound half-way plausible? Any insight would be most appreciated Nate Keegan City of Prescott Information Technology 201 South Cortez Street Prescott, AZ 86303 USA
Samba ships with smbtar.>From 'man smbtar':smbtar - shell script for backing up SMB/CIFS shares directly to UNIX tape drives SYNOPSIS smbtar -s server [-p password] [-x service] [-X] [-d directory] [-u user] [-t tape] [-b blocksize] [-N file<AD> name] [-i] [-r] [-l log level] [-v] filenames DESCRIPTION This program is part of the Samba suite. smbtar is a very small shell script on top of smbclient which dumps SMB shares directly to tape. It works great as a network backup utility, and with Samba installed on the system, can use smbclient/smbtar to perform backups of NT and Windows based systems. It is designed to be a network backup system for your entire enterprise, and is incredibly scalable. It can back up as little or as much as you want, and it does the backup scheduling for you (i.e. no more figuring out which day you should do a level 0 or one of the 9 incrememtal levels :) Check it out at http://www.amanda.org Hope that helps! -- Seeya, Paul ---- Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm. Hello Nate, We use the other way around. On the W95 and NT machines a program called FileBack is installed. This tool monitors the changes made in directories on your PC. You can configure it the way you want. You can find it at: http://www.fileback-pc.com Hope this helps. Jan Mostert. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Hi! This may not really belong on this list, but since the issue of software for backing up ovet the network under Windows came up, I'd also like to recommend DataArmour by TCDC.
