My best recommendation is to upgrade to 7.0 or 7.1 - that https install worked flawlessly for me. What (if any) messages are in your error_log file (usually /var/log/httpd or you can do a find for it). Also, check that your httpd.conf file was updated to include the calls and directives for SSL. I did it the hard way and compiled the three by hand - not a difficult process and everything is working, so I suspect there is a bug in a config file somewhere.
