Section 1.8 of "An Introduction to R" states "Command lines
entered at the
console are limited to about 1024 bytes (not characters)" and indicates
that
incomplete lines may be continued on the next line.  There appear to be unstated
additional restrictions.  For instance, in a console entered assignment
statement using the c() function, if a comma occurs in position 1023, then that
line with its continuation on the next will not be interpreted correctly.
