One thing with the drivers is that when you run them as root, they drop
privileges before talking to hardware. So you might want to try again with
"-u root" on the command line, but I suspect it will be the same
problem.

Often, the libusb-0.1 API is provided by a compatibility layer on top of
libusb-1.0. That looks reasonable.
