The document deals with patching Quagga for supporting realms. The main
reason for this is marking packets recieved via BGP from the big ISP (the
big ISP announges via BGP only his local routes, aggregated in his AS, and
the routes recieved via private peerings and Romanian local exchanges -
this sums up as the "metropolitan" part of the service) so as to get
filter rules and traffic control on this routes dinamicly.
The ideea behind this is this:
Romanian ISP split internet acces into two parts, with different fees:
metropolitan (large bandwidth, small price/mbps) and international access
(big fees, aprox. 300$/1 mbps CIR).
A client of the ISP recieves , let''s say, 10mbps metropolitan access
and 1
mb international acces, and he has to split this more computers. That is
way he splits the access exactly like he got it, so if he has 10 clients,
he will give each let''s say 1mbps metropolitan access and 128 kbps
international.
This method iswell known by the ISP, so to aid clients they provide BGP to
them to aid in recognizing what IP classes fall into metropolitan or
international category. The metropolitan classes are announced via BGP
(aprox. 1600 classes, from /16 to /24), and the default route means "the
rest of the world".
The problem here is that the metropolitan IP change rapidly, so a static
list and traffic control using that list would render 10% of the
metropolitan useless (by useless I mean with traffic limited to the
international rates, not the metropolitan ones).
So, a quick fix: make the metropolitan traffic control dynamic! Mark
routes with realms, match realms in packets for packet filtering and match
realms in tc for traffic control.
