[icecast-dev] Could Icecast be used for this application?
I am developing an application that will require many users to be able to request audio files on demand from a server. There will be thousands of individual audio files. Eventually there will be hundreds of simultaneous users requesting different audio files at different times. This type of application will require a full fledged audio server at some time. Could Icecast be used for this purpose? If Icecast is used, can it be bundled with a commercial application? Can Icecast be used in a commercial endeavor? Where people are charged to listen to audio coming from an Icecast server? Finally, if Icecast is used...do I need my own server? Or are there any hosts out there that already run Icecast and would simply host my audio files for a fee? Did I send this message correctly? Thanks! You should read the license yourself for the full details, but basically you're required to supply the icecast source if any of your customers ask for it (this is not a particularly significant requirement - but it _does_ mean that you must provide the full source for any changes to icecast that you make). The application it is bundled with is not affected in any way by this license. <p>>> Can Icecast be used in a commercial endeavor? Where people are charged > to listen to audio coming from an Icecast server?Yes. If you're using it commercially, we'd love to see a donation of some sort (see http://www.xiph.org for details - it's even tax-deductible!), but there's no obligation.> > Finally, if Icecast is used...do I need my own server? We don't maintain a list (perhaps we should?), but a web search will probably find some. Or maybe one of them will contact you off-list about this.> > Did I send this message correctly?Well, you sent it to the wrong list - this is a question about using icecast (and so should go to icecast@xiph.org), not about developing icecast. But that's ok.
