Hello, There was no problem installing "APT" package in CentOS 4.0 Beta, but so far I could not install APT or Synaptic by "# yum install apt" or by "# yum install synaptic" in a usual manner. Is there any solution for this? It seems to me, something is wrong only for these two packages. Regards.

This is due to lack of support for multi-arch libraries that are required (or possible) on all our CentOS-4 releases except i386. I just did a: yum install apt synaptic and it worked ------------- You will need to pick a mirror and update the /etc/apt/sources.list file ... here is what I have in mine (everything else is remarked out): rpm http://mirror.centos.org centos/4/apt/i386 os updates extras addons -- Johnny Hughes <http://www.HughesJR.com/> -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Why it''s 31bit, it''s another story and has to do with supporting the legacy 24bit addressing mode. The CPU for that arch is 32bit, not 31bit. If i have all the facts right, IBM did sacrifice half of the address space for that 24bit legacy mode (the 32th bit was used for marking 24bit mode commands IMO). But Johnny is right. apt is laking the multiarch mode which is keeping it not so good choice for most of the archs. Most notable x86-64. The ia64 could have ia32-libs/bins on it, but as it''s built, it''s 64bit clean built w/o any other binaries included. That cvould use apt, but we do already have two form on repodata (yum 2.2.x and legacy for up2data), so it''s not worth of it at all ... -- Pasi Pirhonen - upi@iki.fi - http://iki.fi/upi/

It can take a day for all the CentOS mirrors to update. Try again later ... you may need to do yum clean to redownload the good apt and synaptic. -- Johnny Hughes <http://www.HughesJR.com/>

It may be so, but I did not explicitly run anything else. ------------------------- P.S. When I reset the mirror repository (RIKEN, Japan) from Synaptic''s preferences menu, the "warning" disappeared by sudden afterwards, though I did not modified anything else. As long as I could confirmed right now, there appears no error messages or warnings and it seems APT works normally. Regards.
