Xen users - Feb 2007 - running w2k stops after domain creation on xen-3.0.2/ 3.0.3/ 3.0.4

Hi all,

running win2k fails for me and i have no idea how to get it working. Hints 
could helping me are welcome.

Domain creation seems to be ok, but windows start failes. xend log shows
"hvm_shutdown fired, shutdown reason=None"

This is the case for xen-3.0.3 and xen-3.0.4

For xen-3.0.2 the behavior is a bit different, windows installer starts, it 
copies the files and reboots, after windows screen is coming up the progress 
bar stops and the domU is in blocking state. The log shows
"hvm_shutdown fired, shutdown reason=None"

I''ve compiled xen and xen-tools with debug stuff, more debug output but
no
hint why shutdown is fired.

xm dmesg also shows nothing usable.


hardware: IBM T60, Intel T2400 CPU, 1Gb Ram
system setup: gentoo linux,  gcc version 4.1.1
xen-3.0.2 with kernel 2.6.16.28
xen-3.0.3 and xen-3.0.4 with kernel 2.6.19 (gentoo-base patches, xen-patches 
from fedora fc7 testing)

I have no hang problem with HVM the same machine, but with dom0 being
debian sarge and etch, ubuntu dapper and edgy, fedora6 and opensuse
10.2.
Erm, and Win XP.

You might try changing some acpi settings in the guest config, and on
the grub command line for the domain 0 at boot.
And see if it works.

You might also try xenoppix to see if this config and version lets you
run hvm domains without a problem.

Yes, Xen''s debugging and error handling is a bit, say
"simple" at best.

I mean the acpi value in the domU config and the acpi=off and noapic
settings on the grub command line for dom0.

No, there''s a 3.0.4 version of Xenoppix, IIRC, at least 3.0.3.

That you need a newer dom0 kernel then is another problem. But very
first, checlk if with a different Xen implementation it works or not.
If it also not works with xenoppix, you might have not 100% correctly
working hardware, a faulty bios or something.
These things make it hard to run hvm domains and others.

Hi Henning,

I''ve tried xenoppix kernel 2.6.16.33 and xen-3.0.4.

The main behavior is the same, "shutdown fired, reason: none"
What''s going up?

You sad that you use the same hardware.

Please can you tell me your bios version, cpu type and chipset?
