[Xen-users] Running other distros as domu under FC5/Xen 3.x
Hi With great help from the members of this list I got FC5 and Xen 3.x (tar ball binaries) running on my system. I have FC5 installed on /dev/sda6, OpenSUSE installed on /dev/hdc3 and Ubuntu on /dev/hdc1. I am trying to get Ubuntu and Suse to run within my FC5/Xen box. The configuration file I use is : /etc/xen/suseguest (contents) kernel = "/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.16-xen" memory = 100 name = "suseguest" vif= [''mac=aa:00:10:00:00:10, bridge=xenbr0, ip=192.168.2.2''] gateway = "192.168.1.1" netmask = "255.255.255.0" disk = [''phy:hdc3,hdc3,w''] # disk = [''file:/dev/hdc3,hdc3,w''] root = "/dev/hdc3 rw" On running /usr/sbin/xm create -c /etc/xen/suseguest I get a number of errors on module load that modules.dep file is not found etc .. however the boot process continues uninterrupted and Iam finally provided the terminal login prompt. After logging in, however an ifconfig reveals that the virtual if 192.168.2.2 is not setup .. only loopback is enabled (127.x.x.x) .. I tried ubuntuguest (same config as above, disk is /dev/hdc1) but with the same result. (Note that this config was working earlier with FC4 and Xen 2.x without issues) All help to get this resolved is appreciated Regards Srini -- _______________________________________________ Check out the latest SMS services @ http://www.linuxmail.org This allows you to send and receive SMS through your mailbox. (You might need to create a /lib/modules/your_kernel_version folder, but run depmod first just to check.) The unixshell VM I have and all of the VMs I run at home have the IP configured internally to the VM. I have no idea what the vif line for my unixshell account looks like, but my home machines just have vif = [ '''' ] -- Andrew Thompson http://aktzero.com/ _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Re: [Xen-users] Running other distros as domu under FC5/Xen 3.x
Hi Andrew I tried as you suggested .. but since 2.6.16-xen does not exist under Suse depmod complained and when I created the dir and reran depmod it just created empty files (since there are no modules anyway I guess) .. Qn: Should I install Xen also under the guest (domU) OSs and then try running them from within FC ? If you plan to use any modules that you''ve compiled, copy the /lib/modules/your_kernel_name>/kernel folder from your dom0 to your domU and rerun depmod. I *think* that should allow modprobe to find and load them. (Some help here if I''m wrong, please. I generally compile what I need into the kernel and ignore modules.) -- Andrew Thompson http://aktzero.com/ _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Hi Andrew I already tried this .. sure I do not have any errors but my networking is not working still .. only loopback is on when I check with an ifconfig Can any one help on how to get this running ? I need it urgently for a test situation that will come up in a couple of days time Regards Srini> ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Andrew Thompson" <andrewkt@aktzero.com> > To: "Srinivasan S" <ssrini@linuxmail.org> > Subject: Re: [Xen-users] Running other distros as domu under FC5/Xen 3.x > Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2006 14:18:21 +0000 > > > On Sun, Apr 16, 2006 at 08:35:30PM +0800, Srinivasan S wrote: > > Hi Andrew > > > > I tried as you suggested .. but since 2.6.16-xen does not exist > > under Suse depmod complained and when I created the dir and reran > > depmod it just created empty files (since there are no modules > > anyway I guess) .. > > Now that you''ve created the base modules directory, that particular > error shouldn''t show up any more. > > If you plan to use any modules that you''ve compiled, copy the > /lib/modules/your_kernel_name>/kernel folder from your dom0 to your > domU and rerun depmod. Re: [Xen-users] Running other distros as domu under FC5/Xen 3.x
I found a reference to xennet as a possible issue why this may happen (eth0 not showing up) http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-users/2006-04/msg00498.html The solution is apparently to add : "alias eth0 xennet" to /etc/modprobe.conf Can someone on the list confirm if this is the case ? (I do not have access to my system right now but will have to call and instruct someone to do it, so am checking up before hand. apologies) Regards Srini>Hi Andrew>I already tried this .. sure I do not have any errors but my networking is not >working still .. only loopback is on when I check with an ifconfig > >Can any one help on how to get this running ? Mine don''t just magically appear, I configure and bring them up exactly as I would for a real system. -- Andrew Thompson http://aktzero.com/ _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users
