[Xen-users] Is hardware PCI passthrough working in 3.0 yet?
Hi, Ive been stuck on Zen 2.0 for ages, because when I installed it, Xen 3.0 didnt support the hardware passthrough features that Xen 2 did (i use a pair of DVB cards in a Xen machine as a MythTV backend). I noticed on news sites that 3.0 is nearly there - has PCI passthrough been re-instated? If so, to upgrade, I guess I just need to re-build Xen and my kernels... correct? thanks g _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Expect it to go back in later along the 3.0.x series. Ian _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Truth is, I''m still about building the thing :) However, ideally, I''d prefer keeping dom0 as a base, and run everything else in domU''s, if possible. -- Kind regards, Mogens Valentin _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I''ll be happily waiting at 2.0.7 until it comes back. Re: [Xen-users] Is hardware PCI passthrough working in 3.0 yet?
I''ve seen at least a few people (myself included) using it for firewalls and such, dedicating an ethernet card per domU. I''m not sure I''d entirely agree with the statement ''Its not widely used''. We know you all personally :-)That''s not necessarily true; Some of us search the mailing list archives for answers to our questions. I set up a 3.0.0 test box today. Then I spent about 30 minutes today searching, reading and figuring out that the feature is gone in Xen 3.0.0. Better yet, I understand *why* the feature is gone. But I do hope it returns soon... And even if "bug reports have dropped dramatically" I would not use 3.0 for a firewall at the moment, I think. :-) Dirk>On Tue, 2005-12-06 at 14:19 -0500, David Muench wrote: > > >>On 12/6/05, Ian Pratt <m+Ian.Pratt@cl.cam.ac.uk> wrote: >> >> >>>>I noticed on news sites that 3.0 is nearly there - has PCI >>>>passthrough been re-instated? >>>> >>>> >>>Not for 3.0.0 -- its not widely used so hasn''t been a priority. It''s too bad more people aren''t using it.I also haven''t gone for Xen yet because of this feature missing. I''d like to run Xen on a SMP machine where I have a file/mail/news server in dom0 and a router/firewall in domU, i.e. dom0 should have access to most PCI hardware like harddisk controllers, and the router to the PCI network card. However, Xen 2.0.x doesn''t support SMP in a way that makes sense in this case, and Xen 3.0 doesn''t support accessing PCI devices directly from domU :-(>From what I read here, I don''t have the impression that not manypeople use it or would want to. urs _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

I was going to switch to Xen3 but now I''m not so sure. Are there any plans to support PCI-over-DomU again in the future?
