I am attempting to totally move away from Windows and my main stumbling block is iTunes. I have been using it to download talking books to an iPod as I was suffering from cateracts. I had a look at gktpod but it fell well short of my needs. If I download Wine from the Ubuntu repository will I then be able to download iTunes and obtain the functionality that I require? Thanking you in anticipation

[Wine] Re: Will Wine let me load iTunes in Ubuntu 9.04
Remember first to read these instructions : http://www.winehq.org/download/deb Then, have a look at the application database. The relevant entry for Itunes is here : http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=16848&iTestingId=43394 Have fun.
Das Letzte Einhorn Many thanks for your kind reply. I downloaded Wine from the Ubuntu 9.04 repository and then went to Apple for the iTunes download. When asked I said that I wanted the download opened with Wine. Up to that point everything appeared to work OK. Wine was added to my applications list but when I attempted to access iTunes it was no where to be seen. I am offered Programs which extend out to notepad, browse C drive, Configure Wine & Uninstall. It would possibly appear that I have not explained my needs properly as if Wine is asking me to browse C drive it is thinking Windows. I do not have Windows on this laptop only Ubuntu. What I was hopeful of was that by using Wine I could then work with iTunes without having to involve Windows at any stage of the operation. From what I have seen this does not appear to be the case. Can you please confirm my suspicions that I will have to beg borrow or steal a Windows machine to use iTunes. If I have got this wrong and can in fact achieve my aim can you please take me by the hand and walk me through the procedure. Again thanks for your assistance in this matter

The installer is currently broken (there's a hack on the AppDB for version 8), though IIRC 7 may work now. iPod support isn't done yet, but there's a patch on the wiki on http://wiki.winehq.org/USB. How well it works, couldn't say. I'd say use Windows in a vm that supports USB for iTunes. -- -Austin

Austin If the installer is down at the moment I will rather wait and see what develops. I am reasonably new to Ubuntu and therefore Wine so am unsure what is involved. As there is an update to Ubuntu due in October I will wait and see what happens then. It might be possible that the updated Wine is in the repository by then. dimesio OK the C drive is a fake and when I browse it it shows up 2 folders. Program files and Windows. Program opens up with further folders Common and IE. The Common file is empty and IE is an .exe file. The Windows file opens up and displays varying sub-folders a lot of which are showing a system 32 folder and also others with reference to 32 in their name. Although I asked that the iTunes be opened by Wine there does not appear to be any sign of the iTunes in any of the folders. Any idea where it might hide? I downloaded the iTunes for XP 64 should I try again by downloading the 32 bit version or as my Ubuntu is 64 bit am I going to find further conflicts? What best guidance can you offer ? Should I wait until October and keep begging or borrowing XP just for iTunes or what? My thanks to you both for your kind assistance.
Many thanks Austin. Looks very much like I will wait until October and then load the 32 bit versions of both and see what happens. I am totally determined to work only with Ubuntu so don't see any good reason to purchase an OS from Microsoft just to run iTunes. Will see if I can get things to work come October and if not I will be forced to beg or borrow. Once again thanks vm
Warren Dumortier Many thanks for your advice. As there is not too much time between now and 9.10 becoming available I will wait on it arriving. This will be easier than a complete reinstall just now
Warren Dumortier That is just what I wanted to hear. I still think that I will wait until 9.10 is out as from what little I have seen leads me to believe that ext4 is going to be an improvement on ext 3. Provided there will be no conflict I propose to load 9.10 64 bit and then load Jaunty 32 bit and Wine. That I feel will be the best until such time as Wine comes out in 64 bit version. You have been a great help with your advice. It now looks as I will be able to work totally within Linux (Ubuntu) My sincere thanks for all your assistance
