plot order in multi-panel figure
Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a way to 'reset the plot number' on a traditional graphics device?
For instance, I want to have two plots on stacked top of each other (mfrow=c(2,1)) but with underlying grid lines spanning both figures vertically. I can put the grid lines on top if I add them last:
par(mfrow=c(2,1))
plot.new()
plot.window(c(0,1),c(0,1))
for( i in 1:2) axis(i)

How to get legend outside of plot?
I am creating a CDF plot function more user-friendly than any default r
function. Depending upon the bimodality of the data (it is often bimodal),
or any other strange data trends, the points can end up gathering in just
about any corner of the plot. So, when I add a legend, whether I choose to
add it in the bottom right, top left, or wherever, it will sometimes end up
putting the legend right

text/mtext axis labels on graphs
Hello everyone
I have problem with axis labels on graphs, I have my code as below:
plot(0,0,xlim=c(1,ncol(PA)),ylim=c(1,nrow(PA)),main="Stratigraphic
Range",xlab="Time
Bins",ylab="Taxa",cex.axis=1.5,cex.lab=2,cex.main=2.5,mgp=c(5,1.5,0),xaxt="n")
text(1:(length(strat_name)), y= 0, adj=1,
srt=45,labels=strat_name,xpd=TRUE, cex=1) #adds text to x

line over multiplot
Dear Listmembers,
I do have a multiplot with 1 row and 4 columns (4 scatter plots with
same x- and y-axe plotted in one row). I would like to draw a horizontal
line across the whole multiplot at a certain y-value. Unfortunately the
normal abline command stops between the plot.
I hope my problem is clear and there is somebody who can help me
Thanks in advance

Regression line limited by the rage of values
Hi
In R, using plot(x,y) followed by abline(lm(y~x)) produces a graph
with a regression line spanning the whole plot . This means that the
line extends beyond the swarm of data points to the defined of default
plot region. With par(xpd=T) it will span the entire figure region. But
how can I limit a regression line to the data range, i.e between
(xmin,ymin) and (xmax,ymax)?

Adding a legend to R graph device with several plots (no to individual plots!)
Dear Users, I already posted this question: it either went unnoticed,
or it is to basic (if this is so, please sent me a hint).
I would like to know if there is a way to add a common
legend to an arrangement of plots. In the example below, I get four
plots in my device. each one has a density for 1995 and one for 2006.
I have found that using legend or smartlegend I can add a legend to
each plot,

How to add background color of a 2D chart by quadrant
Hi,
I have a 2D chart that is divided into four quadrants, I, II, III, IV:
plot(1:10,ylim=c(0,10),xlim=c(0,10),type="n")
abline(v=5,h=5)
text(x=c(7.5,7.5,2.5,2.5),y=c(2.5,7.5,7.5,2.5),labels=c("I","II","III","IV"))
I would like to fill each quadrant with a background color unique to the
quadrant. Does anyone know how to do this in R?
Thanks,

Positioning text in top left corner of plot
Simple question how can you position text in the top left hand corner of
a plot? I am plotting multiple plots using par(mfrow=c(2,3)) and all I
want to do is label these plots a), b), c) etc. I have been fiddling
around with both text and mtext but without much luck. text is fine but
each plot has a different scale on the axis and so this makes it
problematic. What is the best way to do this?

drawing a rectangle through multiple plots
How do I draw a rectangle across multiple plots on a device?
E.g.,
def.par <- par(no.readonly = TRUE)
par(mfrow = c(3, 1))
plot(1:10, rnorm(10), ylim = c(-4,4), type = "l")
plot(1:10, rnorm(10), ylim = c(-4,4), type = "l")
plot(1:10, rnorm(10), ylim = c(-4,4), type = "l")
rect(2, -4, 3, 4)
par(def.par)
I want the rectangle to extend across the whole device. How

Legend in the outer margin
Dear Rs
I have a 3x3 multiple plot. I would like to have a overall legend in
the outer right margin.
From the help archive, I found that it can be done by setting
par(xpd=NA). However, I couldn't find the correct values
for x and y co-ordinates for the legend. Please find the code snippet below:
par(mfrow=c(3,3), mar=c(4,4,0.9,0.5), oma=c(1,2,2,4),cex.main=1.1)

legend problem
Dear R users,
I have been plotting several graphics in only one page. I intend to plot
only one legend in each page.
Since the graphics are inside a loop I have to do it automatically.
The main problem is that inside the loop I work with differente types of
variables, I mean , the range is different for each one.
I have already tried :
par(xpd=TRUE)
pos<-par("usr")

Problem with ?curve
Dear all R gurus,
I have following syntax:
y = c(1:10)
chippy <- function(x)
{
y[5] = x
sin(cos(t(y)%*%y)*exp(-t(y)%*%y/2))
}
curve(chippy, 1, 20, n=200)
But I am getting error while executing :
Error in xy.coords(x, y, xlabel, ylabel, log) :

text at the upper left corner outside of the plot region
Hi,
is there a way to place text at the upper left corner (or another
corner) of the plot?
I want to place it really at the upper left corner of the whole plot
(the file I get),
not at the upper left corner of the plot-region.
I tried text() and mtext(), and corner.label() of the plotrix package
but it didn't work out.
thanks!

plot scale
Hi,
Is there a way to set the scale of a plot (i.e. number of axis units
per centimeter) when you output it to postscript? If not, how am I
supposed to plot graphs with different axis limits to the same scale?
They just get resized to fit the paper so that graphs which show a
smaller number of axis units end up with a larger scale.
Cheers,
Ben

RColorBrewer
Hi there everyone! So I'm a student in college, taking a very basic
Statistics course. We're using R for most of our assignments. I've hit a
pretty big wall here. I'm attempting to create a heat map of the entire
united states which corresponds to a set of percentages I have for each
state. My teacher suggested that I simply create a color palette with
RColorBrewer that is in the

Plotting color.legend() outside of plot region
Dear List,
I am trying to plot a color.legend() in the right outer margin of my device region. I have read multiple threads on the subject and still can't get it right. I have stolen an example from one of the threads to demonstrate my problem. I have extended the outer margin using par(oma()), and have used par(xpd=NA) to tell it to plot in the device region. I can get the legend to plot
