Partial Derivatives in R
Quick question:
Which function do you use to calculate partial derivatives from a model
equation?
I've looked at deriv(), but think it gives derivatives, not partial
derivatives. Of course my equation isn't this simple, but as an example,
I'm looking for something that let's you control whether it's a partial or
not, such as:
somefunction(y~a+bx, with respect to x,

Problems installing/updating packages in Linux
Hi all,
I feel very comfortable with R in Windows, and am trying to switch over to
Linux. I have R 2.8.1 on Linux and it works great (so far), except for
instalilng/updating packages. For example, using Emacs with ESS as a text
editor, I entered:
> update.packages()
Here are some error messages:
/usr/lib/R/bin/INSTALL: 1088: cannot create

xyplot color question
Hi,
I am plotting scatterplots of horsepower by torque, conditional on brand
(I'm just making up the variables for this example), and the goal is to see
both the scatterplot points as well as the smoothed line. When I do the
following code, I get the same color for the points and line, and would like
the colors to be different, such as black points and a red smoothed line.
How do I do that?

R2WinBUGS not working?
This weekend I noticed that my R2WinBUGS connection was no longer working on
my Windows computer at work AND my Ubuntu linux computer at home. As soon
as WinBUGS opens, the message reads Index Out Of Range. I have un-installed
and re-installed R on both computers and the problem remains the same. At
first I thought it was the new version of R, but I was able to overcome the
problem (on Windows

Function recommendation for this study...
Hi,
I'm not used to thinking along these lines, and wanted to ask your advice:
Suppose you have a sample of around 100, consisting of patients according to
doctors, in which patients and doctors are given a questionnaire with
categorical responses. Each patient somehow has roughly 3 doctors, or 3
rows of data. The goal is to assess by category of each question or DV the
agreement between

ggplot scale_size - is there any way to specify breaks?
Hi,
I am plotting scores for students in a school using a command of the form
qplot(x=Subject, y=Student, data=dataset, geom="point", size=Score)
It lists the Subject factors on the x-axis and the Student factors on the
y-axis - dots proportional to the Score are plotted at the resultant grid.
It works just as I want. However, I want to plot a number of these graphs

reliability, scale scores in the psych package
Dear Professor Revelle and R-helpers,
This is a two-part question: the first part is general, and the second
is specific to the psych package.
First question: In the past I've constructed composite variables from
questionnaire data by using rowMeans(), and then correlating items
with the scale using cor() as an informal check for "bad" items. Over
the weekend I decided to take a

Search Multiple Models
Hello folks,
I have four models, each with their own separate index.
Models = Articles, Blogs, MusicTracks, and MediaFiles
I have individual searches within each section of the site working just
fine, but I want to have a gloabl search that searches across all of
them at the same time and returns the results ordered by score.
Here''s how far I am now...

How to use your own data in gstat and sp?
This seems pretty basic, but I can't get any data to work except for the
documented examples. When the goal is to get to SpatialPixels, here is what
I see...

How to Dedup a Spatial Points Data Set
I'm new to spatial analysis and am exploring numerous packages, mostly
enjoying sp, gstat, and spBayes.
Is there a function that allows the user to dedup a data set with multiple
values at the same coordinates and replace those duplicated values with the
mean at those coordinates? I've written some cumbersome code that works,
but would prefer an efficient R function if it exists.

scores from multinomial logistic regression
Dear all,
I'm interested in extracting the score from multinomial logistic regression
models fit using multinom, to assess the stregth of assocation of the
parameter with the response (akin to the score from clogit/cox regression).
currently I'm using R 1.8.1.
Is there a function that will extract the score from a multinom object or
how i can get back to it? or from using glm?

function to compare Brier scores from two models?
Hi,
I have probability estimates from two predictive models. I have these
estimates and also a binary outcome for a validation data set not used in
calibrating either model. I would like to calculate the Brier score for
both models on this binary outcome and test the hypothesis that the Brier
scores are equal from the two models. I have not been able to find an R
function to do this, can

how to create three new variables? Thanks a lot!
Dear R experts:
I have following data structure: student id, exam time and score. I want to
create three new columes: 1 st before, 2nd before and 3rd before.
For example, for student 1's 4th exam score is assumed to be influenced by
his previous three cloest scores, which are 6, 9, and 10 in that order.
For student 2's 5th exam score is assumed to be inflenced by her previous

Error installing rjags in Ubuntu Linux
Hi,
Here is a step-by-step guide to exactly how I've installed R in Ubuntu:
http://www.nabble.com/installing-R-on-Ubuntu-td10025949.html#a21894865
Regarding rjags, here is what happened:
This webpage

recommends logging into R as sudo R, and then typing:

Cream Text Editor
I'm interested in easing my way into learning VIM by first using the Cream
text editor, liking the idea that it will work on both my Linux and Windows
computers. I've installed Cream on my Linux machine, but can't figure out
how to make Cream talk to R? Does anybody know? I'm using Ubuntu if it
makes a difference. Thanks.

Recoding scores of negatively worded item
Hi,
I'm new to R so please fogive if I write someting silly ...
I need to recode a series of responses from a number of questionnaires.
The data is read via ODBC from a database where all responses are coded
as tables of the form (id, question, score).
After dealing with recoding of missing values, I need to "invert" the
scores of some questionnaire's item in the form x <-

numeric(0)
Dear all,
I am trying to calculate a score for a string sequence consisting of
the following four letters: ACGT.
I have got a matrix giving the scores for each pair of letters.
So for example the string ACCT has got the pairs: AC, CC and CT.
The matrix has got the following form:
names<-c("A","C","G","T");
mscore<-matrix(0,4,4);

Trouble with Functions
Hi guys,
I'm a new to R and following along with Tutorials using this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Practical-Statistical-Analysis-Non-structured-Applications/dp/012386979X
In one of them, they use the twitteR package and describe the following
function (see below). From what I can tell from the documentation (R),
there's a method to call it directly in an interactive session. The way

lda of MASS library
Hi,
it seems that the lda function in MASS library doesn''t give out the constant for the linear discriminant function under the situation that we don''t use standardized variable, anyone knows how to obtain the constant in order to construct the linear discriminant function?
I understand that if the priors are set to be 1/2, the threshold of the discriminant score used to
