map("state" ...) Is the USA cracking up?
Running R version 2.6.1 under Linux, I'm trying to use the maps and mapdata packages and the state database to produce a thematic map of the USA. My problem is that cracks (white spaces) appear between some states--e.g. between Colorado and Utah and between Michigan and Indiana. The resulting visual impression is that the country is breaking up. This occurs in all the projections I have

fPortfolio constraints, maxsumW
Running R version 2.6.1 under Gentoo Linux and using the fPortfolio package, I am having trouble specifying a sector constraint. One of the constraints to be imposed is that assets 1 and 2 together account for no more than 13.63% of the portfolio. My attempt at coding that constraint, "maxsumW[1:2Assets]=13.63" fails. The relevant section of my code file and the resulting error

rv package, rvnorm function
In an attempt to learn to use the rv package, I have been working through the examples in Jouni Kerman and Andrew Gelman's "Using Random Variables to Manipulate and Summarize Simulations in R" (July 4, 2007). I am using a Dell Precision 380n computer running Gentoo Linux and R 2.2.1 (the latest available through Gentoo's portage/emerge system). Everything worked well until I

Dear List members I am using the regsubsets function to select a few predictor variables using Mallow's Cp: > sel.proc.regsub.full <- regsubsets(CO2 ~ v + log(v) + v.max + sd.v + tad + no.stops.km + av.stop.T + a + sd.a + a.max + d + sd.d + d.max + RPA + P + perc.stop.T + perc.a.T + perc.d.T + RPS + RPSS + sd.P.acc + P.dec + da.acc.1 + RMSACC + RDI + RPSI + P.acc + cov.v + cov.a +

Stat textbook recommendations?
Hello, I'm looking for a textbook that can explain some of the math behind the intro-to-intermediate stuff like ANOVA, multiple regression, non- parametric tests, etc. A little background: I took an intro stats course last year and would like to further my education. Being as that was the highest (and only) stats class the local community college offers, it looks like I'm on

Leaps & regsubsets
Hello I am trying to use all subsets regression on a test dataset consisting of 11 trails and 46 potential predictor variables. I would like to use Mallow's Cp as a selection criterion. The leaps function would provide the required output but does not work with this many variables (see below). The alternative function regsubsets should be used, but I am not able to define the function in

plotting results from leaps library
Hi In trying to fit a linear model , I use the leaps() function to determine wich predictors I should include in my model. I would like to plot the Mallow's Cp criteria against p with the indexes of selected model variates as points labels Is there already such a function? (I could not find it) Thanks Anne [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

thematic map of USA
My goal is to prepare a thematic map of the US, with states shaded according to their values for a variable of interest. I would like to include an inset for Alaska in the upper left and an inset for Hawaii in the lower left. If possible, I'd like to use Albers conic projection, or something similar. Thus far I have tried using the maps package with its state database (which omits

batch mode in linux
I'm trying to learn how to use R version 1.1.0 under Mandrake Linux version 6.1. Using R interactively, I get good results. However, when I attempt to execute commands from a file (following the directions in section 1.10 of An Introduction to R, version 1.10) my output disappears. As a default or after a sink() command, I would expect to see output on the console, but none appears. After

R isn't finding tcltk
On a x86 machine operating under Gentoo Linux, I'm having persistent difficulty in getting R version 2.6.1 (the latest available through Gentoo's portage system) to use tcltk. The R command library(tcltk) elicits the following response: Error in firstlib(which.lib.loc, package) : Tcl/Tk support is not available on this system Error in library(tcltk) : .First.lib failed for

separate maps in one figure
My aim is to create a figure consisting of three maps: Alaska in the upper left corner, the 48 contiguous US states in the center right, and Hawaii in the lower left corner. In some ways the figure I'm trying to create is analogous to figure 1.5 in Paul Murrell's excellent "R Graphics", which combines a map of New Zealand with a map of the world. I tried adapting the code

3 questions
Hello R users, I have three questions and I would be grateful if someone could give me an answer to each of these. 1) I have constracted a function that returns an output, which runs in a while( condition ){ run function } loop. I would like to know if there is a way to get the outputs in different windows, every time the function runs, so as to compare easier the results. 2) In my

Stepwise logistic model selection using Cp and BIC criteria
Hi, Is there any package for logistic model selection using BIC and Mallow's Cp statistic? If not, then kindly suggest me some ways to deal with these problems. Mallows' distance or Earth Mover's distance in R?
Hi I am looking for an implementation (or alternative to) Mallow's distance or the Earth Mover's distance to compare distributions or unnormalized distributions (signatures). Is there an implementation in R or can somebody recommend an alternative? Thanks Rainer -- Rainer M. Krug, PhD (Conservation Ecology, SUN), MSc (Conservation Biology, UCT), Dipl. Phys. where to get the "leaps" package
Dear all I am supposed to use Mallow's Cp creterion to select a model which require a "leaps" package. the version right now I am using is R 1.7.1(os:windows), the "leaps" package is not included. please let me know how and where can I get this package and add it to the current version, any caution on adding this package is highly appreciated. thank you best

Forward Stepwise regression based on partial F test
I am hoping to get some advise on the following: I am looking for an automatic variable selection procedure to reduce the number of potential predictor variables (~ 50) in a multiple regression model. I would be interested to use the forward stepwise regression using the partial F test. I have looked into possible R-functions but could not find this particular approach. There is a function

plot with two y axes
I'm trying to make a transition from S-plus under Windows to R under Linux. My immediate aim is to produce a scatter plot with two y-axes with different scales. That can be done in S-plus with a command of the following form: guiPlot( PlotType="Scatter", DataSet="execon", Columns="years, hstart, ship", AxisType="Multiple Y" ), where years, hstart, and

forward stepwise regression using Mallows Cp
So I recognize that: 1. many people hate forward stepwise regression (i've read the archives)--but I need it 2. step() or stepAIC are two ways to get a stepwise regression in R But here's the thing: I can't seem to figure out how to specify that I want the criteria to be Mallow's Cp (and then to subsequently tell me what the Cp stat is). I know it has something to do with

CentOS lists now searchable via MarkMail.org
Hello, Just thought I'd drop a note here... a short while ago I was searching for some info on CentOS, and having been exposed to markmail.org via the R-project <www.r-project.org> <www.r-project.org>I went to markmail to do some digging. At that time, they didn't carry the CentOS lists yet, but after a simple request, now they do. The interface lends itself more to
