What is the R equivalent of STATA's 'drop' command?
Hello, I am trying to do some data cleaning in R. I need to drop observations that take on certain values of a variable. In STATA I might type something like: drop if <variable name> == 3 drop if <variable name> == 4 Is there an R equivalent of this? I have tried playing around with the subset command, but it seems a bit clunky. What would an advanced R user's approach be for

superscript in figures - basic question
Although I see similar, but more complex, questions addressed in the help archive, I'm having trouble adding superscripted text to the y-axis labels of some figures, and I can't find anything in the R documentation on this. I have: ylab="BA (m2/ha)" but I want the "2" to be superscripted. Thanks in advence for the help, or for pointing out the appropriate help file.

Weird blank spacing in plot title when using \n and plotmath
Dear R-helpers, I have been using \n in my plot titles to split long titles into two lines. I recently tried combining \n and plotmath which still gives me two lines for the title but also a weird blank spacing. A simple example is as follows: plot(1:10, main=expression(paste("Exposure\nTemp (", degree*F, ")"))) Is there something I'm missing to close the spacing.

percentage sign in expression
Readers, According to the documentation for the function 'plotmath' there is no apparent possibility to add the percent sign (%) to a plot function, e.g. plot(a[,1]~b[,2],ylab=expression(x~%),xlab=expression(z)) How to achieve this please? yours, rhelp at conference.jabber.org r251 mandriva2009

control point size of superscript when labeling axes with title()
Hi- A journal has asked me to make all of my text annotations on a figure at 10-point size. For the most part this is easy, e.g. by creating figures with: pdf(..., family='Times', pointsize=10) But where I have superscripts (or subscripts) in axis labels, the default seems to be to shrink the superscripted text slightly. For example this code:

Title with substitute and paste
Hello All, I am generating some plots where the title is generated with substitute and paste. An example: nval <- 20 plot(0,0) title(substitute(paste("n = ", n), list(n = nval))) But when compared to: plot(0,0) title("n = 20") the title in the first plot looks slightly different (it is not in bold). How can I get the two titles to look exactly the same? Also, how can I

Male and female signs as subscript in plot
Hello, I'd like to add labels to my plot that include a male or female symbol as subscript. I'm working in Windows Vista and R 3.0.0. I am able to add the male symbol to the plot as regular text (NOT as subscript), e.g. with: mtext("Male\u2642") This displays the word "Male" followed by the male symbol on the plot. But "\u2642" does not work when I try to

getting a title in a plot during an lapply
In my code below tempa and tempb are numeric vectors that I combined into a dataframe along with the deciles of tempa. I have an lapply statement that goes through the dataframe and does ten plots according to the appropriate decile. The code is below and it works fine. There are no bugs so I figure there was no need to include structure statements on the data. Also, I don't want to use coplot

Supperscript, subscript and double lines in the main/sub title and using greek letters
Dear R-help, I am trying to express myself as best as I can here. If you also use Latex to edit math reports or other languages with similar editing method, you'll see what I'm talking about. What is the equivalent function in R to xyplot in S?
Page 140 of MASS uses the function xyplot. But I don't find it in R. Is there a package that I should load to use xyplot. Or there is a function with a different name in R that does the same thing as xyplot in S. xyplot(Gas ~ Temp | Insul, whiteside, panel = function(x, y, ...) { panel.xyplot(x, y, ...) panel.lmline(x, y, ...) }, xlab = "Average external temperature (deg.
